Pros & Cons of Insect Light Traps

Bug lights

Bug lights work by shifting the light output of a typical incandescent bulb further into the yellow part of the visible light spectrum. Insects can see light at the higher, violet and ultraviolent end of the spectrum. Bug lights don’t kill or repel bugs, but makes it more difficult for them to see the light and be attracted to it.

Pros

  • Simple and cheaper than zappers
  • Screws into standard light sockets
  • Non lethal, meaning no beneficial bugs will be killed
  • Available in a variety of wattages, as well as incandescent, CFL and LED versions

Cons

  • Once bugs are there more will be attracted regardless of light – it is a preventative measure but not a treatment
  • Doesn’t eliminate blue light output altogether, so some bugs may still be drawn to your lights

So Which One is Better?

If you are trying to keep insects away from your porch, backyard, or other outdoor area, it is really a matter of taste between the zapper and bug light.

Some people are put off by the “mist” of bug parts, or are hesitant to lethal measures of pest control. Bug lights are preferable if this is the case, though will not be as effective as a proactive measure.

The colour and intensity of the light bulbs may also be a factor in your choice, depending on the level of light required outside, as well as the colour. You have more variety with bug lights, but note that both lights and zappers still have a level of fluorescent lighting.
